Prunus viginiana: It bears white clustered flowers that later produce dark purple fruit that is excellent food for birds– and is great in pies and jellies. The dense growth makes Chokecherry a good choice for windbreaks. It is a deciduous shrub that grows rapidly and reaches a height of 15-25 feet. It prefers sun but tolerates partial shade. Grows well in sandy soils. Livestock should not eat cherries.
